LAB7, where performing arts and technology work together

There’s a new prototyping and mediation space in town, and it’s dedicated to performing arts and creative technologies!

The 7 Fingers now have their own lab, LAB7, a technological toolbox in a formidable playground, to propel local creators towards new creative horizons.

The 7 Fingers creation center counts more than 60,000 square feet of creative space in the heart of Montreal, just steps away from Place des Arts. In these studios, LAB7 offers state-of-the-art equipment for motion capture, projection, immersive and interactive experiences, 3D creation, and much more.

Over the past year, LAB7 has hosted various projects, exploring mocap for live shows, interactive environments, stage projection and much more. Projects ranged from immersive exhibitions for a science center, to hybrid shows, augmented reality acts and even the creation of an NFT collection by an artists’ collective.

These residencies also contributed to several applied research projects, conducted in partnership with CRITAC (Center for Circus Arts Research, Innovation and Knowledge Transfer): using artificial intelligence to reduce the need for markers in motion capture, analyzing audience reactions and emotions in hybrid experiences, etc. LAB7 can also introduce students to these tools, in collaboration with the École nationale de cirque (National Circus School), the National Theatre School of Canada, the SAT and multimedia creation schools. Finally, it serves as an excellent showcase space for suppliers, equipment manufacturers and software creators.

Come visit the LAB7 booth throughout MTL Connect, see demos of the projects, and meet the team.

You can also attend the LAB7 Forum on November 17-18, the first event dedicated to performing arts and creative technologies professionals. It will be a great opportunity to share experiences, showcase projects, share ideas, and build a common future for these two creative sectors.
